Speakeasies were the worst kept secrets of Prohibition. When prohibition came into effect on January 17, 1920, many thousands of formerly legal pubs open to men closed across the country. Those who wanted to drink had to buy spirits from licensed druggists for "medical" purposes, from clergy for "religious" reasons or from illegal sellers, so-called bootleggers.
